Howdy from Abilene / Stamford

Yesterday was the first day of the Texas Cowboy Reunion… what a busy day (well, afternoon/evening at least). Things started off with loading up (instruments, chaps, percussion equipment, etc.) at 1:30 – I’m glad that’s the last time I’ll have to be doing that. We pulled out of here about 2:45 and got there around 3:30. After unloading everything, I realized something – I’d loaded everything – except my trombone. Oops. Luckily, there were people coming for the rodeo and not the parade, so I was able to get ahold of Trent, and he brought it up with him (thanks Trent). Also lucky for me, was that we brought a few instruments that weren’t being used, like Sean’s french horn, so I marched with that (thanks Sean) – not like I could play anything on it, but that was better than nothing. The parade itself wasn’t as bad as some people made it out to be – don’t get me wrong, it was hot out there and hotter than blazes in my boots from all the shuffling, but it wasn’t too bad.

After that, we went and “chilled” at the Sconce residence (they’re parents of an ex Cowboy Band member), and that was so nice of them. Next up was dinner at some place in Stamford, and it was ok; they served hamburgers on texas toast, but the meat patties on these things were like 3/4 of a pound and probably 3/4 of an inch thick… too much.

Then it was off to the rodeo – and that was fun, I’ve missed being one of those “crazy Cowboy Band” members, and so the rodeo was greatness. I’ll have pictures of all of this up later in a new gallery…

On that note, sorry for the lack of new pictures over there, I’ve had some issues with my computer and other stuff, not to mention I haven’t had much to take pictures of except for my cubicle desk… maybe I need to get out more.

Anyways… good times here in Abilene, I’ll be back soon…

And today, since I’m in a good mood, you get not one, but two “Currently Playing” songs…

So here I sit,

bored on a Friday night.

The week’s been busy though, so maybe I need some down time. Monday and Thursday nights I helped out with filming at “Music Texas,” some sort of church music conference. Monday night, our choir sang the “Jesus Our Treasure” Christmas musical that Mike wrote and our choir/orch performed last Christmas (and they did very well, standing ovations for a couple of the songs), and then a group called “Evidence” sang; FBCC folk have heard them before, Kirk Kirkland is their lead and they have sang at our church before. Thursday night, it was a different church singing their Christmas music, but after them, Denver & The Mile High Orchestra played about an hour and a half set… and it was phenomenal. If you’ve never heard of them, easiest genre to fit it into is “big band,” because they replicate that 1930′s & 1940′s sound and mix it with modern instrumentation, and most of their songs have a Christian theme (HSU kids – think NewSong… but better, one singer (sometimes two), and with super talented musicians)… so that was greatness, and then since I was staff, I most definitely had the opportunity to meet them, and that was cool.

I need a weekend. Good thing it’s here… maybe I can find something to do with it.

So… somebody tp’d (or is it tp’ed?) our house the other night… got us pretty good. First time we’ve ever been tp’d. Just wish whoever did it would have had the guts to tell us about it first; a.) we could have told them that the whole family was home and that ringing the doorbell at 2 am probably wasn’t a good idea, and b.) so that I could have sat outside with the water hose in-hand, ready for combat. Oh well.

How’s everybody’s summer going? Mine’s going ok; I’m working everyday, 8 am-5 pm, so I’m staying pretty busy I guess. Nokia released some new slider and flip phones the other day (link)… those of you who have told me you’d get a Nokia if they just had a good design (like all those little silver flip phones), keep your eyes open.

Not having my computer (and everything on it) is not so much fun… I’ve been living off the same 50 or so songs for the last week now; while 50 may sound like a lot, consider the fact that adds up to about 4 hours of music, and I spent over 8 hours at work everyday, thus I end up listening to every song at least twice a day… this is one of those instances where I kick myself (not literally, that’d hurt) for not having bought an iPod yet (it’s on this summer’s “to buy” list)… though, my PowerBook should be getting a new hard drive tomorrow, and then I’ll be able to get back to my wonderful 15 GB of music (and buying the new Coldplay album, which I hear is greatness).

Some of you may have noticed my recent absence… the reason is two-fold.

For one, my PowerBook’s hard drive failed Sunday night, so it went in for service Monday afternoon and I probably won’t have it back till sometime next week.

More importantly, the other reason, which some of you may or may not have heard, would be that Friday night, June 3 2005, my grandfather passed away in his sleep at the age of 79. He had heart problems for years (he had open heart surgery 20 years ago), and had a heart attack just a couple months ago… so his passing away was semi-expected, but still not really expected. The funeral was hard for everyone, and my grandmother is doing quite well. Please keep my family in your prayers, the next few weeks will not be easy.
