What do you want to be when you grow up?

Posted on March 24th, 2006 in Posts | No Comments »

Three times in the past week, that question, in one form or another, has been asked of me. And, it’s kind of got me thinking… because at 20 years old, I still don’t know the answer to that seemingly basic question. I mean, I think I have an idea of what I want to do. I’m on track now to graduate with a BBA in Computer Science – with the thought of being something of a computer systems administrator somewhere… but where? I really don’t know, nor do I know if that’s what I want (or more important, what God wants) for my life.

I’ve thrown around more than a few careers in my mind. I know when I was little, I wanted to be a pilot. Not really sure what got me off that track, other than my fascination with computer-ey things. Even in elementary school, I was the one that knew how to load the games for everyone else to play (we had old-school computers like this; 5 1/4″ floppy drives, command prompt only, etc.)… And now, though I know that my career will somehow be “technical,” I just don’t know how, or what, it will be. I know (and some of you can attest to this – and I’m sorry) that I like to be the guy with the answers; I like to be the “go to” guy. And being a computer systems administrator, I would definitely be a “go to” guy… but that also carries with it the whole “being a manager” thing – that I’m not sure if I would like or not.

If you know me, you know I’ve had some pretty amazing opportunities concerning my job on the breaks, and I’ve seen corporate America and even international corporate practices up close and personal… and I don’t know if being “a manager” is in my fiber. I don’t particularly enjoy my “Intro to Management” class, but that may just be because I find it pointless to assign all these terms and classifications to management and the processes that go along with it – because I’d say they don’t match up with real-world practices about 80% of the time.

And now, I have a job at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church as their Media Intern. I create the media that is used in Sunday morning and evening services, and some for Wednesday nights – and so far, it’s been fun. I enjoy putting these presentations together, and it’s giving me a chance to explore the graphic designer in me. I’ve always diddled in graphic design for myself, but not quite like this before. I was asked the other day if this was something I would consider doing as a full-time ministry – and again, I was lost for an answer.

But sometimes, knowing nothing is better than knowing it all – and somehow, I’m okay with that.

Tonight at work, I could not find the mens restroom, so… that’s right, I used the women’s. Why do girls get a carpet rug in their bathroom?

52 Days To Summer

I really like thunderstorms. I don’t so much like being outside in them, but I like to be inside and watch the waves of rain pound against the window, watch the wind make the trees dance, watch the lightning arc across the sky and strike the earth, and listen to the thunder crack and roll like no other sound can. There’s something about thunderstorms that I can’t really explain, but I’ve needed one for a while now. Thanks, God.

It was a good break. We made another day-trek, to Marietta, OK, to eat at McGeeHee’s Catfish (one of those middle of nowhere places) – and I dare say it was the best catfish meal I’ve had. Instead of just hopping on the interstate though, we followed the backroads up through Texas and into Oklahoma – and in case y’all didn’t know, Texas is a beautiful state. Makes me want to find a couple backroads routes to travel to/from home on…

Me and dad replaced my door speakers with a pair of Clarion’s. They were relatively cheap, and sound alright. They weren’t my first choice, but (thanks to Dodge), they were just about the only decent sounding speakers I could find that would fit in my door. (Pictures later).

Also, I don’t yet have a fix for the email thing… Instead of it being a problem with my code or the plugin I’m using, it has more to do with my hosting provider not allowing emails with multiple BCC addresses to be sent… so we’ll see what I can do.

And why is it so cold now? I thought we were done with this “winter” thing.

“If I could open my arms
And span the length of the isle of Manhattan,
I’d bring it to where you are
Making a lake of the East River and Hudson
And if I could open my mouth
Wide enough for a marching band to march out of
They would make your name sing
And bend through alleys and bounce off other buildings.

I wish we could open our eyes
To see in all directions at the same time
Oh what a beautiful view
If you were never aware of what was around you
And it is true what you said
That I live like a hermit in my own head
But when the sun shines again
I’ll pull the curtains and blinds to let the light in.”

Spring Break

Posted on March 15th, 2006 in Posts | No Comments »

Yeah, it’s an obvious title. I just couldn’t think of anything wittier (more witty?).

Hope you’re all enjoying this break from school/classes; I know I am.

I’d noticed a buzzing in my right-side door speaker a week or two ago, and hoped it was just something rattling around (and I, being lazy, was hoping that maybe it’d stop). So when I got home on Friday and took my door panel apart, I was a little disappointed to find the foam surrounds on the woofer had torn a good deal. So now I have to either repair or replace them – neither of which is easy on a Dodge Intrepid, apparently. Nothing is “standard,” from the speaker size and mounting pattern to the connections. So getting that resolved is part of my break.

We (the family) went to Glen Rose today. I had thought we were going to do some exploring in and around Dinosaur Valley, but the parents had other ideas. We went instead to the Fossil Rim Nature Preserve – which was amazingly crowded. It’s like a zoo, except you drive through it and you can feed the animals if they get close enough. It’s cool enough and all, but I was all geared up to go hiking around.

I’ve got too much to do, and too few days to do it. I want another week.

Yet another post where I feel like there was something I wanted to post about, but I can’t remember it.

More of a test than a post…

A few of you subscribed to my blog – my congrats to you.

But, a couple of you noticed that I’d posted and that you never got the email notice – my apologies to you.

So, this is more of a test than it is a post – if you see this post, and you didn’t get the notice – let me know.

A real post later – for now, spring break has begun.  Hallelujah.

*EDIT: Apparently, the subscription system isn’t working quite right (to say the least), so I’m deactivating it for now. If you are still interested in subscribing (once I get it working), you can e-mail me, and I’ll put your name on the list.
