ps: waited in line in San Jose at the Oakridge Mall Apple store for 6 hours. It was SO worth it too! Apple paid Starbucks to give us free coffee AND paid for free water bottles (necessitating many trips to the bathroom) too. Many food stores took orders in the line and delivered food to us as well. It was a fantastic experience that I did not expect to be fun.

I had the same issues with the AT&T/Apple iTunes system. I just called 888-898-7685 (AT&T Number Portability Dept) and typed in the number I wanted to transfer.

The system all of the sudden said "This number can be transferred. Please press 1 to accept the terms and conditions. I did so and voila, the system said "I am sorry, please hold for a representative."

The official AT&T policy is to activate as a new line (skip number portalibilty), call the above number after you have iPhone activated and port the number to take the new number's place. This will ensure you can use iPhone as soon as possible yet also ensure you do NOT lose your old number. DO NOT CALL THE OLD COMPANY AND ASK WHY YOU CANNOT PORT YOUR NUMBER. This is just asking them to close your old account and your old number will go into the ether. Many complaints from iPhone owners are surfacing stating that the old accounts were terminated after talking to Sprint/Verizon/T-Moble cos the operators took the phone calls as a "request to terminate the service". The operators terminated the service, charged the termination fee and voila--you just lost your old number.

PS: The "official AT&T policy" DOES require a NEW SIM CHIP THOUGH. So watch out. If you do it this way, you must be prepared to go into an AT&T store to have them issue you a NEW SIM CARD.

Sorry, but them's the breaks.

IM me at jann AT mac.com or email me at jannlinder AT gmail.com if you have any questions about my experiences.
